It may not be an HQ2. But Amazon is still going big in Austin.

After years of ramping up operations on the city’s north side at the Domain, the ecommerce super power has announced plans to open a new tech hub in Austin with 800 tech jobs to accompany it.

Amazon says it has created about 1,000 jobs in Austin in the past four years. Now it will accelerate hiring of software and hardware engineers, research scientists and cloud computing experts. Once the new team is on board, Amazon will have about 7,400 employees in Austin. That, the Austin Business Journal noted, would put it in the running with Apple as Austin’s No. 2 tech employer, behind Dell Technologies.

Amazon’s Austin teams are largely focused on Amazon Web Services, Amazon business and the company’s devices. With all the new jobs, Amazon says it will expand to a new 145,000-square-foot office at the Domain next year.

Amazon’s forthcoming Austin Tech Hub is one of 17 it operates outside of its hometown, Seattle, and Crystal City, Va., where it is establishing its second North American headquarters.

“We are pleased to see Amazon’s significant investment in the Austin region continue to grow,” Gary Farmer, Opportunity Austin Chair of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, said in a news release. “This expanding presence is indicative of our region’s ability to provide creative and innovative talent.”

Amazon’s expansion here is part of a huge influx of tech jobs brought to town by some of the world’s largest tech companies. In December, Apple announced it would establish a new $1 billion campus in North Austin that will be home to 5,000 Apple employees and is expected to grow to as many as 15,000 employees in years to come.

Google has also been rapidly expanding its presence in downtown Austin, with plans to lease an entire new tower near the one it is currently in. Meanwhile, General Motors, Walmart and The Home Depot and several other large companies has established tech-related outposts in Austin, often saying they want to be close to the city’s strong tech talent base.
